West Palm Beach City Administration Building: A 3D Rendering Case Study

How Xrender Studio produced a set of photorealistic 3D renderings for the West Palm Beach City Administration Building, designed by Spina O'Rourke + Partners, and how we approach civic visualization.

Civic buildings are among the hardest projects to visualize well. They have to read as public, permanent and dignified; they sit in a real urban context that everyone in the city already knows; and the images are often seen by commissions, stakeholders and residents long before a single foundation is poured. There is little room for a render that feels generic.

This is a look at how Xrender Studio approached the set of photorealistic 3D renderings we produced for the West Palm Beach City Administration Building, designed by Spina O'Rourke + Partners, a West Palm Beach architecture and interior design firm with more than 40 years of work in the region.

The project

The West Palm Beach City Administration Building is a civic project in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach. We produced a set of photorealistic views of the building in its downtown setting. As with most public buildings, the visualization had two jobs at once: communicate the architectural intent faithfully, and present the building to a non-technical audience in a way that reads instantly as real.

For a studio based a few blocks away, this was also a hometown project. We know downtown West Palm Beach, its light, and how a building of this kind has to sit within it.

The challenge

Three things make a civic building like this demanding to render:

  1. Context accuracy. The building has to sit believably in a place people recognize. The surrounding streetscape, scale and materials all have to feel correct, not like a building dropped onto a stock background.

  2. Material honesty. Public architecture is judged on permanence. The stone, glass, metal and landscaping have to read as the real specified materials under real Florida daylight.

  3. Reading at a glance. The image is often shown in presentations and public settings, so it has to communicate the design in seconds, not reward close study.

Our approach

Every Xrender project starts the same way: before we render anything, we read the plans and study the materials, so we understand how the building is meant to work rather than just modeling its geometry.

From there, our process on a project like this runs:

  • Camera and composition. We establish the key viewpoints that best communicate the building in its downtown context, and share early clay-model previews so the composition is agreed before we invest in lighting and detail.

  • Lighting and materials. We build the scene to real Florida daylight and apply the specified materials, so the finished images reflect the actual design rather than an idealized version of it.

  • Photorealistic rendering. We render in high resolution, with our technical team reviewing every image against our own quality bar before it reaches the client.

  • Two structured revision rounds. Feedback is handled in defined rounds, so the client always knows where the project stands and is not left acting as art director.

Our standard turnaround is about two weeks, with a fixed quote returned within 24 hours of receiving a brief.

Why it matters for civic projects

Photorealistic visualization is not decoration on a project like this. Civic buildings depend on public and stakeholder buy-in, and a rendering is often the first and clearest way people outside the design team understand what is being proposed. A visualization that is accurate to the design and honest about its materials helps everyone, from commissioners to residents, evaluate the real building rather than an approximation.

That is the standard we hold every project to, civic or private: architecturally faithful, materially honest, and clear at a glance.
